Embedded Payments Emerge as a FinTech M&A Target

Recent payments deals suggest that buyers value infrastructure built into the software and workflows businesses already use. Transaction volume is not the only priority. Investments in Payload, Priority Commerce’s acquisition of IntelliPay, and CSI’s acquisition of Qolo show banks, processors and technology providers moving deeper into verticals including real estate, government, utilities and commercial banking.

The appeal goes beyond payment revenue. Embedded payment providers can give buyers access to established customer relationships, transaction flows, industry expertise and valuable data. These assets often come from systems that already support critical business processes.

Payments are also moving into accounting, vertical software and commercial platforms. This creates new opportunities for providers. They can expand into services such as treasury, lending, payouts and account management.

This opportunity also brings new demands. Compliance and risk management become more important as programs grow. So do integration and operational capacity. Providers may need to support more payment methods, currencies, payment rails and partners.

The emerging M&A theme is clear. Payments infrastructure is most valuable when it is built into a specific industry or software environment. It also needs to scale with the businesses that use it.
